Hagia Sophia

The Fatih district covers the ground of the old imperial capital of Constantinople and houses many historical sites.

Maybe the most known site is Hagia Sophia, that was built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral in the imperial capital.

The building started as a Cristian Church and then an Orthodox Church. From 1204 to 1261, under the Latin Empire, it became the Latin Catholic Cathedral. After the fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans, it was converted into a mosque. Under the secular Republic of Turkey it was made a museum, but in 2020 it was re-opened as a mosque.
